LEAN INTO IT- SILVER GELATIN & DIGITAL
Series Statement
To stand naked, directly engaged with natural surroundings, brings a corporeal experience that reminds oneself of what it means to be an animal in a very complex and mysterious world. Without tools, without clothing, and nearly alone, there are no distractions from being in the present and utilizing the senses. I then offer this experience to the viewer: By truncating the figure and obscuring the identity of the subject, I hope to allow the viewer an imaginary extension of his/her body into the scene.
Additionally, this collection of work is an exploration of the spectrum of control that we seek over the self, each other, and nature. In this search we attempt to avoid the processes of atrophy and interpersonal entropy that threaten our ability to retain our health, safety, and relationships. Depending on how we view these processes, nature, and ourselves, we may find vulnerability and intimacy on one hand or over-protection and isolation on the other. For me, the imagery of human interactions with the wilderness and the human form as landscape acts as a symbol for this general search for control and hopefully gives voice to the above states. In this way, it is my goal to meld metaphor with visceral experience in order to offer an intimate, contemplative moment to the viewer.
